Orthopedic Manual Therapy/Medical Massage Explained
This is the heart and soul treatment of The Body Mechanics. We begin working with our clients from an extended intake process to help determine their best possible treatment options.
Orthopedic Manual Therapy/Medical Massage involves Orthopedic assessment, manipulation, and movement of musculoskeletal soft tissues to increase functional movement with the goal of reducing or eliminating pain. A unique multidisciplinary approach is systematically utilized to restore structural balance throughout the body, which promotes focus on the prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal dysfunction, chronic pain and injuries.
Orthopedic Manual Therapy is a type of therapy that mixes various types of Advanced Manual Therapy techniques. They include, but are not limited to, Myofascial Release Techniques, Trigger Point Therapy, Neuromuscular Therapy, Therapeutic Stretching, and Structural Integration.
Orthopedic Manual Therapy consists of three primary elements:
-
Assessing clients condition and needs
-
Adapting the treatment to heal the source of pain
-
Educating the client about self-care activities that will prolong the results of the therapy.
Orthopedic Manual Therapy can be an efficient and effective method of therapy for anyone experiencing moderate to severe and even chronic pain, work or stress related tension, or would like to increase flexibility and performance. d Orthopedic Manual Therapy can also be an effective tool to managing musculoskeletal injuries to avoid surgical or pharmaceutical interventions, depending on the individual situation.
The MMNCE [Medical Massage National Certification Examination] defines medical massage as: "The clinical application of manual therapies applied to a patient that has been diagnosed, prescribed and referred to a medical massage therapist by the patient's treating physician."
Medical Massage is provided in conjunction with treatment of sports, work, personal, or motor vehicle collision related injury or medical condition. Conditions such as Fibromyalgia, Migraine, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ), Frozen Shoulder, Sciatica, and Whiplash have shown improvement.
Medical Massage is prescribed by a Physician for specific injury and/or physical conditions.

Requires Prescription from doctor
-
Some treatments may be covered by insurance
The goal of Orthopedic Manual Therapy is to call the body's attention to areas of tension or inflammation while creating an environment where the body can use the information to heal itself.
Therapeutic Massage Explained
Therapeutic Massage (aka Deep Tissue) is a full body blend of medium to deep massage, therapeutic stretching, and specialized techniques such as Trigger Point, Myofascial Release or Structural Integration.
Therapeutic Massage can be utilized as 'maintenance' supplemental to Orthopedic/Medical Massage treatment. After restoring balance and function, the objective is to maintain that balance. Regular Therapeutic Massage, coupled with appropriate self care, continues that balance.
Prenatal/Postpartum Massage Therapy
Pregnancy is a unique physiological and psychological experience which requires a special considerations from a Massage Therapy perspective. While pregnancy is chronologically divided into 3 trimesters we consider the entire process both physiologically and psychologically to have 4 trimesters, with postpartum being the 4th. In addition to working with women, in postpartum massage therapy infant massage therapy can be incorporated into the session in various ways.
The approach to pregnancy centered massage, whether prenatal or postpartum depends on the goals of the mother, and can be explained as either problem focused or primarily for relaxation.
Some of the benefits of massage therapy during pregnancy include:
-
Strengthening and stabilizing the pelvis during pregnancy.
-
Helping the mother adjust to the increase in blood and lymph volume within her body.
-
Bridging the connection between mother and baby.
-
Helping the body to prepare for childbirth (late term).
Some of the benefits of massage therapy postpartum include:
-
Recovery from childbirth, 4th trimester healing
-
Improving breastfeeding
-
Working with baby can help to manage colic, improve bonding, immune support, increase cognitive development.
There are some contraindications to Prenatal and Postpartum Massage therapy, so a consultation is required in order to make sure it is for the benefit of both the mother and child.

Additional Therapy Services
Contemporary Cupping (Multiple Methods)
Cupping is an incredible modality that among many other benefits - increases circulation, relaxes soft tissue and support, draws stagnation, pathogenic agents and toxins out of the body and releases a myriad of pain causing factors. Myofascial Release, Lymphatic Drainage and Detoxification are only 3 of the therapeutic outcomes produced during a proper Cupping Treatment.
Another valuable asset regarding Cupping is that it feels great. The pulling action engages the parasympathetic nervous system, thus allowing a deep relaxation to move through the entire body. It is not unusual to fall asleep when receiving this treatment. Clients are surprised at how relaxed, warm and light they feel – hours... usually even days afterwards.
Contemporary cupping methods can be incorporated into any massage session with both client and therapist consent for no additional charge.
Fire Cupping
Fire cupping is the most traditional form of cupping therapy we offer at The Body Mechanics. They provide all of the benefits of plastic and silicon cups, but are much more intense.
We DO NOT apply any fire to the skin of our clients in this service. Fire is used to create a vacuum within the globe of tempered glass cups which are then applied to the body.
Fire cups are only available to established clients with experience receiving cupping therapy. This is a stand alone treatment limited to 30 min sessions.
Fire cupping sessions are $75/30 minutes.
